Judge Pickrell was appointed to the Ketchikan District Court in October of 2022. This is his first retention election.

Performance Summary

After conducting its performance review, the Judicial Council determined that Judge Pickrell met or exceeded performance standards on all criteria, including professional competence and legal ability, integrity, impartiality and fairness, temperament, diligence, and administrative skills.

The Council also determined that Judge Pickrell met or exceeded educational requirements set by the Alaska Supreme Court, and complied with judicial ethics requirements.

Because Judge Pickrell met or exceeded all performance and educational standards, the Alaska Judicial Counci recommends a “yes” vote on retention in office.

Professional and community activities: Judge Pickrell helped to develop and update policies for the new Sitka Healing to Wellness Court, a therapeutic court run jointly by the Alaska Court System and the Sitka Tribe of Alaska. He also organized an event to familiarize attorneys in southeast Alaska with the services of the state’s Alcohol Safety Action Program, to help attorneys provide better support to their clients and to minimize recidivism.

Other performance indicators: A review of Judge Pickrell’s financial and conflict of interest statements showed he complied with all disclosure requirements.

Timeliness: Alaska law requires judges’ pay be withheld when a decision has been pending longer than six months. The Council verified that Judge Pickrell was paid on schedule, and he certified that he had no untimely decisions.

Ethics: There were no public disciplinary proceedings against Judge Pickrell, and the Council’s review found no ethical concerns.
